'Dorset based State of Undress ...don't just talk the talk, they get out there and walk the walk ..' Maverick Magazine Jan 08
'..their mix of folk, traditional, rock, blues, country all make for this band's distinct quality and individual sound that make the band so unique.' Scrumpy n Western Sept 07
State of Undress are a rocky rootsy band from Dorset playing a distinctive brand of original music. Their guitar-based songs interlaced with violin in addition to drums and bass move from the thought-provoking and evocative to the shamelessly foot-tapping.
They have a busy 2008 lined up. Having started the year by supporting the great Dave Cousins of The Strawbs at the Half Moon Putney, they are now looking forward to playing some great festivals in the summer including the new Evolve festival in Weymouth; the Luddenden Music Festival near Halifax; and The Great Dorset Steam Fair - a little nearer to home! In the autumn the band embark on a tour of art centres and theatres which will take in venues from South Wales across to London down to Devon and culminate in their annual Christmas concert held this year in their hometown of Christchurch at the lovely Regent Centre.
In addition to all of that, they have just released their new live CD Caught in the Act! (Catalogue no; SOU004 Rosebud Records). It is available from all major record stores - HMV, Borders and on-line retailers such as Amazon and Play.com and of course direct from us - see 'newlivecd' page - and at gigs! Caught in the Act! is a 13 track CD that really captures a typical State of Undress performance - shaky eggs included!
Live Set
The band's live set contains mostly their own material and moves from the atmospheric 'Spellbound' and 'Beyond Repair' through the almost bluesy jazzy tones of 'Ghosts of Wasted Chances' to the foot-tapping exuberance of 'Ain't Nothin' 'Until Today' (including a fab drum solo) and 'This Time'. The band have written some new material which they have recently introduced to the set - the poignant ballad 'Invisible'; the extremely lively, up-and-at-'em 'Jump To It!';. and most recently a beautiful song 'Sweet Stuff' co-written with the late, great Peter Foster. New songs about to make it into the set include The Love Detectives; Mudeford Mood; and Plenty More Fish in the Sea. Look out for these in the next couple of weeks and a new Kirsty MacColl cover! Gigs usually end up as a bit of a party and as anyone who has been to one of their gigs knows, they have a bit of a thing going on with some shaky eggs!
State of Undress are a difficult band to pigeon hole. Their music is provocative, thoughtful, raunchy, fun and original: a sound that is all their own.
State of Undress consists of Charlie Rose (lead vocals); Alan Rose (guitars and vocals); Samantha Jane (electric and acoustic violin); Malcolm Windett (bass and electric upright bass); and Keith Fletcher (drums, African Drums; Congas and percussion);
