'Charlie Rose has a lilt to her voice that carries with it the salt scent of the sea (and) the band plays with a pleasure that is physical. They love what they do and it comes through loud and clear.' The Alternate Root
'a terrific band ...overflowing with spirit and a compelling energy. Their accmpanying blend of roots-rock, country Celtic flavourings and a full-bodied melodic musical assault creates a powerful live combination...' R2 Rock n Reel Magazine.
'State of Undress provides feisty, fun, dynamic and passionate music...a show you don't want to miss.' Maverick
'Bubblier than an aero, with the kind of effervescence that can't fail to set toes a-tapping and mouths a-smiling. If you're a fan of rootsy fiddle bands, check 'em out!' The Crack magazine
'Dorset based State of Undress ...don't just talk the talk, they get out there and walk the walk ..' Maverick Magazine
'..their mix of folk, traditional, rock, blues, country all make for this band's distinct quality and individual sound that make the band so unique.' Scrumpy n Western (online version: www.mag4livemusic.co.uk )
State of Undress are a rocky rootsy 'fiddlesome' band from Dorset playing a distinctive brand of original music. Their guitar-based songs interlaced with violin in addition to drums and bass move from the thought-provoking and evocative to the shamelessly foot-tapping.
They had a fabulous 2009. They are now looking forward to an even busier, more eventful and successful 2010. They had a great start to the year when they learned their song 'Morning Glory' is being used to introduce the early morning programme of the same name on BBC Radio Bristol and Somerset. They have some brilliant gigs booked with some cracking venues such as Fat Lils in Oxford and Katie Fitzgeralds in Stourbridge; they will be working once again with Grant Showbiz, Billy Bragg's long-time producer, on some new tracks in March; they are making a return trip to Scotland in May including a gig at the lovely and renowned Inn at Lathones in St Andrews; they have a summer full of festivals, fairs and outdoor gigs including their fifth year at the Great Dorset Steam Fair (but they can always fit more in!); and at the end of the year they will be taking their Christmas Show 'State of Undress Go Festive!' on the road to celebrate releasing a new Christmas EP which will include their single 'The Legend of Christmas Eve'. They also have a few musical surprises in store - as you know, with State of Undress anything can happen ...and probably will! See you at a gig soon!
Their most recent album is Livin' it, Lovin' it! released last September.Here's what they've been saying about it:
'Traditional and modern folk effortlessly blended together ...' 5* Maverick
'State of Undress continue to produce a most agreeable blend of roots, country and folk-rock. Their seven-track EP Livin' it, Lovin' It! bookended by two superply realised originals, the positively raunchy and extremely catchy 'One More Shot (of you boy)' and closer the inventive, grandiose pop-rock and fiddle fired vision of 'Red Waters'. Between the two ...cuts like the tongue in cheek 'The Love Detective' and the Anglo-Americana of 'Country Girl' suggests a most positive future for the five-piece.'
R2 Rock 'n'Reel magazine
'State of Undress mixes vocals ..with jig and jump worthy music... Their current album Livin' it, Lovin it! says it all. The band plays with a pleasure that is physical. They love what they do and it comes through loud and clear. That being said, the passion can only move the music so far. They have the chops to move seamlessly from the pop/rock of The Love Detective into their own comfort zone of a more roots flavored rock, a sound the band calls 'fiddlesome'...State of Undress don't merely play their music, they prod and push it along with gale force and the consistency of the tide.' The Alternate Root
In addition to all of that, their live CD Caught in the Act! (Catalogue no; SOU004 Rosebud Records) which they released in the middle of 2008 received some really warm reviews. Rock n Reel in particular praised its 'compelling energy' and 'lung-busting Joie de vivre'! It is available from on-line retailers such as Amazon and Play.com and of course direct from us - see 'newlivecd' page - and at gigs! It is also newly available to download in its entirety or individual tracks from iTunes and indiestore. Caught in the Act! is a 13 track CD that really captures a typical State of Undress performance - shaky eggs included!
Live Set
The band's live set contains mostly their own material and moves from the atmospheric Spellbound and 'Beyond Repair' through the almost bluesy jazzy tones of 'Ghosts of Wasted Chances' to the foot-tapping exuberance of 'Ain't Nothin' 'Until Today' (including a fab drum solo) and 'This Time'. Other songs in the set include The Love Detectives - a completely eccentric song , now a gig favourite, defying all description which could only have been written by Malcolm the bass player! ; Mudeford Mood - a haunting melody from Alan featuring Keith on African drum with soaring fiddle from Sam, and Charlie on a four-foot rain-stick; Plenty More Fish in the Sea and the storming 'Country Girl' both written by our great friend Skipper. All these songs are on the 'Livin' It, Lovin' it!' mini-album. As you know, they don't do many covers but when they do, they choose a song that they completely love and put their own distinctive stamp on it. So new to the set is 'Wagon Wheel' by The Old Crow Medicine Show. At their Festive Show in December, they debuted a beautiful song written by Malcolm It All Comes Down To Love which, uniquely, features Keith on vocals. See, they do let him out from behind the kit sometimes! And watch out for a very raunchy song coming your way 'The Hangman's Daughter' with wicked drums and storming fiddle! Gigs usually end up as a bit of a party and as anyone who has been to one of their gigs knows, they have a bit of a thing going on with some shaky eggs!
State of Undress are a difficult band to pigeon hole. Their music is provocative, thoughtful, raunchy, fun and original: a sound that is all their own.
State of Undress consists of Charlie Rose (lead vocals); Alan Rose (guitars and vocals); Samantha Jane (electric and acoustic violin); Malcolm Windett (bass and electric upright bass); and Keith Fletcher (drums, African Drums; Congas and percussion);
Charlie's shaky eggs now sponsored by Classic Drums, Boscombe.
